ALBANY, N.Y. — Today, 100 frontline environmental justice leaders from 18 states sent a letter to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, urging them to pass the strongest packaging reduction bill possible. It’s imperative that the legislation reduce single-use plastic packaging by 50%, without any glaring loopholes. The group writes:
“We represent frontline communities that live in the shadow of major plastics and petrochemical facilities that are making us and our families sick. Plastic production is resulting in significant air pollution, water pollution, and soil pollution that has compromised our health and the quality of our local environment.
New York state needs to lead the way by adopting this legislation that will cut plastic packaging by 50%. This bill can lead to transformational change that is long overdue.”

Earlier this week, the American Lung Association sent a memo of support to Albany lawmakers, writing, “Reducing packaging and related supplies, especially plastic, will significantly decrease energy and resource consumption, reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and protect our lung health.” View the memo here.
Notable signers of the letter include Time 100 List’s Sharon Lavigne of St. James Parish Louisiana Jess Conard, East Palestine, Ohio; The Descendants Project in Cancer Alley Louisiana Society of Native Nations; The Port Arthur Community Action Network in Texas; and more.

Re: Support a strong packaging reduction bill, S 4246-B, A 5322-B
Dear Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and Speaker Heastie:
We write to you with an urgent request that you pass the strongest packaging reduction bill possible, introduced by Senator Harckham and Assemblymember Glick.
You may be wondering why out-of-state groups are contacting you on this bill. We represent frontline communities that live in the shadow of major plastics and petrochemical facilities that are making us and our families sick. Plastic production is resulting in significant air pollution, water pollution, and soil pollution that has compromised our health and the quality of our local environment.
New York state needs to lead the way by adopting this legislation that will cut plastic packaging by 50%. This bill can lead to transformational change that is long overdue. Further, it is imperative that the bill not include loopholes and that it continues to block polluting chemical recycling facilities from counting as real recycling.
Cutting plastic pollution starts with cutting plastic production. We need your vigilant work in the coming days to get a very strong bill over the finish line in the NYS legislature. Thank you for your commitment to improving environmental injustices, as evidenced by this pioneering bill.
Sincerely,
Sharon Lavigne
