Celeste is a former college professor and a current full-time environmental activist.

Her interest in the environment was awakened in 1988, when she took a job as an interpreter and nature guide in Doñana National Park. This was her favorite job ever, but it also marked the beginning of her ecoanxiety, a condition for which there was not even a name back then and that has accompanied her all her life.

In 2019, she started a Facebook group she called Sustainable Roanoke, hoping to get a few friends involved in environmental pursuits. Today, that group, which is an affiliate of Beyond Plastics, has grown to over 1.3K members and has organized many recycling events, cleanups, refill stations, and other activities that have had a clear impact in the community.

Celeste and her husband recently embarked on permaculture adventure with the help of a puppy (Rita Hayworth) and 3 chickens (Ginger Rogers, Marylin Monroe, and Kim Novack).

Celeste has taken Judith Enck’s class on plastic pollution and Megan Wolff’s on the impact of plastics on human health, and is doing her best to pass on all she’s learned. The Speakers Bureau is a dream come true for her because it combines her two passions: education and the environment.
