Urge Home Depot To Stop Selling PVC

Polyvinyl chloride (aka PVC or vinyl) is a common plastic that's made from the chemical vinyl chloride -- a known human carcinogen that's associated with liver, brain, blood, and lung cancers. This toxic chemical has polluted communities and sickened residents in Louisiana, Texas, and, most recently, East Palestine, Ohio after it was burned following the 2023 Norfolk Southern train derailment disaster.

Roughly 70% of all PVC is used in building materials, and as the largest home improvement chain in the U.S. and world, The Home Depot should leverage its leadership and influence to ban PVC from its store shelves and sell safer building products.

Change is possible! The Home Depot has led the industry in removing harmful chemicals from its products in the past -- eliminating eliminated phthalates in flooring, PFAS in carpets, and deadly methylene chloride in paint strippers. More recently, they’ve made progress in reducing the use of PVC in their private-label packaging. But they continue to sell PVC in brand-name packaging and many building materials, like flooring.
