Breaking the Plastic Habit: Finding True Solutions

We are pleased to invite you to this important conversation with former EPA regional administrator and founder of Beyond Plastics, Judith Enck, and Omega CEO and founder of the Omega Center for Sustainable Living, Robert "Skip" Backus.

Plastic is everywhere in our lives, and now we know that it has penetrated everywhere on earth, with devastating consequences for the future of life. How can we face the challenge of building public awareness and action on something so deeply ingrained in our global culture?

Judith Enck’s work with Beyond Plastics pairs the wisdom and experience of environmental policy experts with the energy and creativity of college students to build a vibrant and effective anti-plastics movement.

In this talk, she offers real solutions that will both motivate and mobilize you to become part of the movement to end plastic pollution.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Judith Enck founded Beyond Plastics in 2019 to end plastic pollution through education, advocacy, and institutional change. She is a senior fellow and visiting faculty member at Bennington College, and was recently a visiting scholar at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University.

Appointed by President Obama, she served as the Regional Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, overseeing environmental protections in New York, New Jersey, eight Indian Nations, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Previously, Judith served as deputy secretary for the environment in the New York Governor’s Office, and policy advisor to the New York State Attorney General. She also is a past president of Hudson River Sloop Clearwater.

Robert "Skip" Backus is the chief executive officer of Omega Institute, the United States' premier holistic learning center, offering innovative educational experiences that provide an integrated approach to personal and social change.

For more than 16 years as CEO, he has provided pivotal leadership to diversify and expand Omega's offerings—nearly doubling educational programming and staff. He has played a significant role in creating programs to support veterans, nonprofits, women leaders, and to bring yoga and mindfulness to underrepresented populations.
But perhaps his most visionary leadership is on behalf of the environment. He is the founder of the award-winning Omega Center for Sustainable Living and has recently launched the Omega Climate Initiative to advance existing and emerging solutions both at Omega and through partnerships around the world.
